One of my greatest pleasures is hearing my guitars come to life in the hands of wonderful players. Listed below are musicians and clients that have had the opportunity to play an RS Muth guitar.

Kinloch Nelson

Kinloch is an extraordinary fingerstyle guitarist who seamlessly blends folk, jazz, classical, and American popular music with original compositions. Kinloch’s expressive and dynamic playing always reveals the true nature of the guitar. It is a pleasure to hear Kinloch bring out the best in my guitars.

“This guitar is a delight to play. It’s response is quick and snappy, the sound is broad and the dynamic range wide and even. Randy set the action low enough for my lazy hands but high enough to bring out what the guitar can do. A winner.”

Lisa Bigwood

Lisa is a nationally renowned folk artist whose music truly stirs my soul. It is an honor to have Lisa as a player of one of my guitars. I can't wait until her new CD is released.

Here's Lisa Bigwood sharing some down time with Andy Goessling of Railroad Earth at the 2009 NERFA Conference performing "Big Empty Yard" on her RS Muth guitar.

“well, your guitar caused an uproar at the open mic tonight.... I mean, literally, people were standing in line....it is absolutely the BEST sounding guitar I have EVER heard on stage, it just ROCKS, and everyone agreed on that...”

“I fully expected once I got it home to have that slight slump after being so excited about a new thing feeling...like the reality not living up to how I imagined it...but NO SUCH THING happened...not even a little!! In fact, the guitar is even more wonderful than I could have hoped...it just is exactly the right size, feel, sound, everything, it seems like it plays itself...I LOVE it!!!!!!!”

Gary Richards

Dear Randy,

Recently, after several days of comparisons, I purchased a guitar from Klem Mazuro at Cathedral Music in Troy. I played guitars from Lowden, Larrivee, Bourgeois, Goodall and Lakewood; to my surprise [and delight] I left with a used guitar from a maker about whom I knew very little, beyond what I read about his involvement in the Cherry Seven Project- a luthier from Hamilton, NY named Randy Muth.

I now own the Muth S16, SN 01099 you crafted . I can only say I hope more people discover your guitars. My S16 is an extraordinary instrument. While it wasn’t custom made for me, it is easily one of the most playable guitars I’ve ever held. It is also one of the best sounding guitars I’ve ever heard. The tonal range is impressive from trebles that chime to a bass that is especially deep and resonant. What really amazes though, is the way the trebles, mids and bass blend to create a uniquely voiced guitar of great complexity. Somehow the guitar, which can kick out some gritty blues can also sound absolutely mellow and lush with jazz chords or clear and bell-like with folk-style arpeggios. Aesthetically, the guitar is beautiful, your workmanship is impeccable.

I’m over my head here- I’m not doing a very good job of describing a guitar that really is unlike any other guitar I own. On your website you write that sometimes things come together in a way that can't be explained; that seems to be the case here. So, to keep it simple, I’ll just say you’ve built an absolutely wonderful instrument that will bring me a great deal of pleasure every time I play it. Thanks.

Regards,
Gary Richards

John Reynolds

John is the proprietor of Golden Age Fretted Instruments and an accomplished guitarist who has played literally thousands of great guitars, both old and new.

Disclaimer: The guitar John is holding is not one of mine. I don't build electric guitars.

“Randy's guitars are a mix of traditional techniques mixed with some of his own forward thinking ideas. The fit and finish on his guitars is as fine as any I've seen. If there is anyone better I want to see it. His sound is very complex and dimensional with a unique quality I can only describe as built in acoustic reverb! You really need to play a Muth to see what you're missing out on.”

John Kirk

John is an extremely accomplished multi-instrumentalist and composer. In addition to his work with Quickstep, John works with the Vanaver Caravan and the Susquehanna Stringband. His composition, “Long Roads” has been recorded by the Dixie Chicks. If you ever have the opportunity to catch John perform, don’t miss it.

“This guitar has a beautiful balance, rich bass and warm treble, and I absolutely love that it is so fingerpicking friendly. So expressive!”

Robert Schwartz

“Randy - It was great finally meeting you at the Woodstock show Saturday. This was a roomful of world class builders and players who knew what they were looking for, and it was nice to see the crowds around your booth and the obvious recognition your work is getting. I've been playing the Cuban/Lutz S15 for a year and a half now and it's still a gas every time I open the case. The instrument is so nuanced that I can pull out sounds that are just not available in other guitars, and every note has depth, development, clarity and sustains forever. The new prototype, by the way, is ridiculously good! Hope to stay in touch and I'll definitely be keeping track of the great things you're doing.”

“Hi Randy, I wanted to let you know how much I'm enjoying my guitar. The weekend I got it at ski camp I wasn't able to play it because (you may have heard) I was sick all weekend. Now that I've had almost 2 weeks I can say its a joy to play. I'm just beginning to discover what this guitar has to offer and every day I feel like I'm improving. I'll keep you posted. My friend Anson, an accomplished player regrets playing it. He has a rule not to play other’s guitars so he pines for another. He has hearing issues, but was impressed with how well he could hear it.”

Jim Holler

“Having the opportunity to play one of Randy Muth’s guitars is and absolute pleasure. The top end is everything you expect from a smaller body guitar with singing highs. The bass is unexpectedly strong and clear. Articulate and even across the tonal spectrum, Muth guitars are a delight to play and listen to. If I were to make steel string guitars this is the sound I would strive for. I am happy to hang RS Guitars in the Trinity Guitars studio next to my classical guitars. ”

“This is an awesome instrument, both to look at and to play. Very articulate with great clarity and definition. The voice has an interesting, kind of reverb quality, very resonant. Highest quality materials and workmanship throughout. The ergonomics of this guitar are right on, as comfortable as a special custom fit suit. The set-up work is perfect with excellent playability! I have accumulated, over the years, many carefully hand-picked guitars and this one must be right among the very few choicest. The fact that the design is something off the usual menu makes it that much more attractive and interesting. Good work, I think you are onto something Randy. The enclosed letter is a nice personal touch, too. ”
